Know Your Script
Okay, so this is an easy one, right?
Obviously an actor has to learn their lines but dialogue is only part of a script.
What kind of script are you working on? Monologue or scene work? Stage or screen?
First, you must understand your role, the context (where and what is happening) and your objective. You must understand exactly what’s going on.
An Actor Listens
Listen to understand, not to respond.
We are often too fixated with responding rather than listening. Actors, are you actively listening? Are you hearing what the other person is saying; their struggles/stories/emotions? What aren’t they saying? Listening is a process by which we should aim to UNDERSTAND, not just respond.

“Shakespeare? Ugh.”
This is usually the response teachers receive from students when the time comes to study Shakespeare. In 16 years of professional practice, I have rarely been met with an enthusiastic reaction when Shakespeare’s name is mentioned.
In my classroom Shakespeare is essential. As are the Greeks, Wilde, Dickens, among other authors and eras. I have never impressed upon any student that they must LOVE Shakespeare; instead, I cultivate an environment of appreciation for his body of work.
